The stylists' designs define the installation space for the structure, the components to be included and their functionality. The overall vehicle as a system must incorporate the spaces needed for all its parts and these must be installable and removable at the varying degrees of freedom of highly automated and of manual labour-based series production processes.
Nowadays digital mock-ups (DMUs) are used for this. This is a gigantic database with graphics of all vehicle parts available throughout the development process. It makes weight and tolerance simulation possible even at very early development stages.
