Rücker engineers develop pedestrian protection system

New testing plant simulates vehicle collisions with pedestrians - Optimal precision that is currently unique - Automobile manufacturers are preparing themselves for new legislation from September 2015.

Wiesbaden, 09 February 2011

Improving pedestrian safety on the roads is the main emphasis of tests that the engineering contractor Rücker has been carrying out for some months now on behalf of automobile manufacturers using unique simulation equipment. The group’s Munich branch engineers specialise in such development projects.

With the aid of the world’s first mobile electronically controlled plant and state-of-the-art testing and simulation systems safety tests are being carried out by the Munich branch to ascertain the effects of vehicle traffic accidents with pedestrians and to prevent them occurring in future. The main advantage of the new equipment our engineers are using is that speeds can be precisely electronically set in all tests. The new equipment is the first that offers such precision. Other pedestrian safety testing equipment currently in use is either hydraulically or pneumatically operated and hence does not offer such precision speed setting.

The metrology results of the tests carried out by Rücker Munich provide data that can be used by automobile manufacturers to develop appropriate vehicle equipment. The overall results yield developments that will in future ameliorate the effects of collisions between pedestrians and motor vehicles or prevent them happening altogether. This will hopefully enable the automobile industry to prepare itself in good time to comply with the stricter legal rules that will come into force from September 2015 governing motor vehicle approval for use on public roads.

The Rücker test technician responsible for the testing involved is Markus Stangler of our Munich branch. He emphasised the importance of the electronic equipment we’re using by stating that “This equipment gives us the major benefits of precision in measuring reaction forces and precise setting of speeds thanks to the electromagnetic power used”.

In short: Rücker AG – the publicly quoted engineering contractor

We expect a 15 percent improvement in turnover for the 2010 financial year.

Rücker AG of Wiesbaden, Germany, was founded in 1970 by its current chairman and majority shareholder Wolfgang Rücker. It is now a market leading engineering goods and services contractor.
